It's been a while, but I haven't been idle. I've been sending my novel "Protos Mythos: Dawn of the Dark Age" to various agents and publishers.
My short esoteric poem, entitled "Aleph", which was published in Issue #2 of Hidden Spirit Journal, has been accepted for a second run (in electronic format, that is) in the Journal of the Western Mystery Tradition. It should appear in the next issue, which will be out in about four or so months.

I got the acceptance over a week ago, but have been very busy with my final edits of my fantasy novel, "Protos Mythos", which is shaping up nicely. I'll keep you posted about the progress soon...

-D

Hobbit Pride

TheOneRing.net recently hosted a "Hobbit Pride" contest, calling for poetry, essays, art, etc. from fans of the Hobbit, which had its 70th anniversary recently. I entered and won one of the slots. I thought I'd share the poem here:

Half The Height

Half the height, but not the soul
Are hobbits from the land, the Shire;
Against Nazgûl, dragon, wolf, or troll,
The Halflings fight, and so inspire
The “larger” folk to do great deeds;
Big trees may grow from smallest seeds.

Bilbo was the most well-known;
He broke the code of hobbit kind.
A Perian prince without a throne,
A rugged man, and yet refined.
By Gandalf’s will he travelled far
To places where no hobbits are.

His tales have reached the world of Men,
A journey there and back again.

-D

Good News & Good Opportunities

So there's some good news about my fantasy novel, "Protos Mythos: Dawn of the Dark Age", for I am nearly finished my preliminary edits of it. A few more things to go, which may take another couple of weeks (particularly since I need to fill in some gaps and have limited time available, due to work), and then I'll be getting some reader comments from a few people who want a preview of the work before its published, and are also willing to devote some time to a critical appraisal of the book.

So, here's where you come in. I'm offering a lucky one or two of you the chance to read the novel before it comes out if you are willing to a) provide reader feedback on your general enjoyment of the piece; b) constructive criticism on the story, characters, mood, writing, etc., including pointing out any inconsistencies, glaring grammatical or typographical errors (which, I dare say, should be non-existent, hopefully, since I've gone over the book a number of times, as have others), and any plot holes you might encounter ; and c) keep the material confidential; that is, if you receive a copy of the manuscript, you alone read and comment on it, and you do not lend or give it to others without the prior permission of the author, and you do not share extracts from or copy characters, storylines, phrases, etc. from the work (remember that this is a strictly-copyrighted business, and I am more than willing to enforce these laws should it be deemed necessary).

So, now that the heavy stuff is out of the way, do any of you feel like reading a great epic novel? The story follows Ifferon, a cowardly cleric who lives in a small monastery off a coastal town. He is the last in the direct bloodline of the dead god, Telm, who battled evil many generations prior, and he is destined, many say, to follow in the footsteps of this god, to end the summoning of the enemy god that Telm imprisoned in the Underworld before his death. The trouble is, Ifferon doesn't want to live out his destiny. He has seen the darkness and wants nothing to do with it. He is not a hero and never wants to be, and, truth be said, who would want to be? This is, indeed, the very reason why he became a cleric, for he is not truly a Cleric of Olagh (Olagh being another name for Telm), but uses this hermetic career-choice as a reason to hide away. It is only when his coastal town is attacked by a fleet of enemy ships (intent on slaying him before he gets to live up to his blood and spoil their devious plans) that he finds himself on another path of flight, this time, however, right into the enemy's hands. Will courage conquer fear? Will he use his sacred blood to end the call of the enemy god, or will he meet his own end, spilling that blood on the earth he has abandoned? Read "Protos Mythos: Dawn of the Dark Age" to find out.

Sales pitch over. Who's in? ;)

-D

P.S. Is that a better blurb than the one I gave before? It has more detail, but I was thinkin that "short and sweet" was good, which gave birth to the previous one.

Protos Mythos: Blurb #1

I thought it might be high time that I shared a little more about my fantasy series (and, indeed, world) Protos Mythos. While I have shared a rough map of one of the lands within this world, I haven't really revealed much about the story itself. So, without further adieu, here is the short blurb for the first book, "Dawn of the Dark Age":
<quote style="font-style: italic;"></quote>

A cleric who is the last in the bloodline of a dead god is forced to face his destiny when an enemy fleet attacks his coastal town, sending him on an epic journey around a war-torn world so that he can end the summoning of the enemy god - little knowing that the actions taken on this journey are playing right into the enemy's hands.

Does this make you want to read the story? Let me know what you think.

-D

Protos Mythos: Boror Map Preview

Some of you may know that I've been working on a fantasy novel for a number of years now, and I wanted to say that it's nearing completion (in its final umpteenth rewrite with its final umpteenth edit soon to come), so I thought I should share a little about it. I'll save a blurb (short description of the story found on the back cover) for a later post, but to whet your appetite, here's a rudimentary image of the map of Protos Mythos (the world my story is set in) centring on the region known as Boror, where the story starts (and where most of the characters of the story come from). As a further note of interest, the very beginning of the story starts at a monastery at Larksong Beach. Want to know more? Feel free to comment.

Copyright, etc., goes without question, but I trust most of my readers already know about that ;)

-D

"Morimur" [Poem] Accepted At Haruah

My poem "Morimur" has been accepted for publication in Haruah Magazine. The contract is signed and away, so hopefully that will be in print soon (I am still waiting for the issue of Haruah with "Inner Skies" to come out in actual print, as opposed to just the digital version, so I expect the print version containing "Morimur" will be some day away too). I'll keep you posted.

-D

"While The Wyverns Watch" TSR Issue In Print

Issue 25 of The Sword Review is now in print and can be ordered here. It contains my poem entitled "Why The Wyverns Watch" among other excellent works of poetry and fiction. Order a copy (it's only $6.99!) and support the work of the authors in question (who don't receive any payment for each copy ordered, but appreciate the exposure) and the magazine itself.

-D

Inviting The Muse

"Inviting The Muse"

by Dean F. Wilson

"My Muse just isn't with me today!" We've all said it (in some manner or form), and we've all voiced our frustration when our Muse just gets up one morning (always a little earlier than us, of course), packs their bags, and heads off into the sunset. Perhaps they're only off on a holiday, but whatever their reasons may be, they left no word (indeed for us writers, having no word is often the very reason for our frustration), and they may have even left some dirty dishes or the toilet seat up. How dare they abandon us like this, leaving us with our sparkling blank paper and 0k Word documents. How dare they depart just five pages before the finishing chapter, or five words before the last verse of a poem we thought was going somewhere. Indeed, how dare they go somewhere and not take us along with notebook or laptop at the ready.

And here we are, looking at a huge wall of emptiness, of pointless and dull ideas and weak lines made up of weak words made up of weak thoughts. We miss our Spark, our inspiration – indeed, we find it difficult to even sit down and write at all, and when we do we start with nothing, and this nothing quickly becomes something we want to send to the Recycle Bin.

So - what do we do? Well, we can sit and wait for our sunburnt Muses to come back from their holidays (fresh with interesting cultural tales), or, for the much less patient of us (like myself), we can invite our Muses to join us when we need or want them. Yes! No need to write once every cycle of the moon – you can bring inspiration into your life – you do not have to wait for it to find you.

But how do we find it? Well firstly we need to sit down and force ourselves to write – true, this is nowhere near as enjoyable as when we get a new idea on the bus and rush home to write it all up, but it really does beat writing nothing, and writing is great practice, no matter how bad. Plus, wouldn't you rather write the crap stuff in your "off time", leaving you with just the good stuff when you do get back into your cycle?

There is, however, another thing you can do. When you invite your Muse to join you, literally do just that – send out an invitation. Don't just sit there whining about being left behind with no inspiration – ask to be inspired!

Name your Muse. Be it Average Joe or Unique Eugene, personifying them is an excellent way to bring them into your life. Write a story about them (indeed, ask them what their holiday was like), and for those of you who really want to have fun, give them multiple personalities (mine certainly has a few!). And when there are empty pages, fill them with something – anything! Look around you; wires, mouse, pens, pick a word and follow it as it scurries off somewhere. You may be surprised where it leads.

So next time you see that wall of emptiness, bulldoze it down, and send a surge of reclaimed inspiration at the dam in your creational landscape. Sometimes your Muse really can't help if you don't ask!

Originally published in Writers4Writers newsletter, April 2006 issue.

My short story entitled "Unnoticed Adventures" has been accepted for publication in The Sword Review today. The contract is printed, signed, and will be on its way tomorrow, but I'm not sure exactly when the story will be in print (they have a large backlog of accepted material for the next few months). I'll post an update when it's available to read.

-D

"Missing The Mark" Poem Rewrite Request at DKA

I submitted a poem entitled "Missing The Mark" to Dragons, Knights, & Angels Magazine a little while back, and tonight I got a call for a rewrite, given the editors were 50/50 on it (some loved, some weren't so sure). So, with a bit of crafting, hopefully this will turn into an acceptance sometime soon.

-D
